Advice
What’s one thing every prospective PLU student should know?
If you want to get a true idea of PLU, you’ve got to do more than just see the campus. Come immerse yourself in the PLU community! Stay overnight in a residence hall & hang out with current students, eat a meal in the University Center Commons, sit in during a class, meet with a professor &, of course, meet with your admission counselor! In the end your college choice is about a good fit for you, & one of the best ways to discover that is to truly experience what it’s like to be a student here.
What do you like about living in the Northwest?
I love the outdoors! The mountains & forests for hiking or skiing, fantastic biking trails (I have found some great trails), the Puget Sound for kayaking, & even the ocean are all close. I also love that you can get outside really anytime of the year to do these, even if it is sometimes necessary to take your raincoat.
How is PLU different from other universities?
The PLU community is not only concerned about what you accomplish as a student, but is sincerely invested in who you are as a person. This is a place where education is not only what you learn from books, but a commitment to challenging you to understand yourself, those around you, the world you live in, & then applying that understanding to the ways in which you live your life.
What’s one thing that still surprises you about PLU?
I am surprised (though I feel I really shouldn’t be) by all the amazing things the PLU faculty, students, & alumni consistently accomplish, year after year. Whether it’s receiving a Fulbright Scholarship, traveling to Antarctica, or initiating a bicycle co-op on campus, I feel like every time I turn around someone associated with PLU is changing the world!
Name one way that PLU has changed your life.
As a student at PLU, I discovered that learning can be so much more than sitting in a classroom, opening a book & memorizing facts. Learning is asking questions, listening to others, & allowing your ideas to be challenged both inside & outside a classroom. I realized that in order for learning to have any meaning, it must be utilized & applied throughout your entire life.
